Is This the Most Overlooked Secret to Guitar Tone?!
Guitarists love to talk about tone. What pickups are the best? Which head reigns supreme? Which effects do I need? What order should I put the pedals on my board? Which cables should I use? How hard should I pick? How much wood would a woodchuck chuck?
But it seems like there's a *significant* piece of the puzzle left behind in these discussions.... Let's get to it today and crack the code.

Mate, im now onto the Magma album..... Thanks again. I needed this..
That's awesome! Glad you're enjoying, man. They're phenomenal. Still don't like "Fortitude" much though. haha
bro this is fucking awesome
Mids are making bigger, thicker tone as well
Absolutely.
Hey Man Iv been enjoying your guitar videos and thought id watch this review. Never heard of Gojira before and wanted to say thank you for the introduction. Just sat here listening through The Link album. Hot Damn! that Mario guy can beat the skins... Think I might drop tune the Ibanez this evening.. lol
Mario is incredible! Arguably my favorite modern metal drummer. Glad you enjoyed it as well. Thanks for checking out the video. I'll have to get back into review mode soon. haha
@@HunterHomistek do you have an insta?
What tuning are you in?
The Les Paul was in Drop B I think. And the Tele at the end was in Drop D.
I heard noise gate can kill sustain anyway tq for presentation info is appreciated
That is true, but particularly with high gain, it's not much of an issue. It's all about setting the gate to just start killing the noise and not murdering sustain in the process.
@@HunterHomistek I got you tq for correcting me
0:05 my tone actually has plenty distortion but way too much string noise and when I take out the kids it doesn’t sound nearly as good and I don’t even have a noise gate pedal😭😭
I just found out your channel. Your playing is great - super tight, aggressive and to top it up you have such great finger tone. Keep it up! You deserve so much more than just 1k subs. Cheers from Russia✌🏻
I appreciate that immensely, brother! Thank you for checking out the video and my channel. It means a lot.
They sound cool at home to scoop, but once you play live with low mids, you will find out that you need them to even hear yourself over your band. Embarrassing not to hear your solo because you chose to have cool sounding riffs instead. My happy spot was cranking a TS9 dx tube screamer, tone pretty high, eq moderate on my AVT 150h Marshall hybrid amp, and focus on solos not sounding too sharp, and the solos would come out nice and creamy, but the riffs would sound a little muddy. But that's the trade off. I just got a JVM410h so those battles are over, but the little beater did well for what it is. Don't scoop guys. Find a definition in what you're playing. Good vid
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it! All great points. Funny enough, my first REAL amp when I started playing in a band was an AVT150 half stack. I kinda miss that thing. haha
Great video stop saying literally it actually means nothing when used that way. Cheers
love this dude
haha Appreciate that, man! Thanks for watching. Means a ton.
@@HunterHomistek I appreciate you, man
That sounds good boy!
Appreciate that, Tomas!
Great video!
Hehe I think the scooped version obviously sounded better, you can tell he is making the "mean face". I think adding back mids is a necessity, but just add enough so that it works with the rest of the band, like scoop ot the fuck out and slowly add mids back in to the point where it is enough.
he pulls the whammy from the other way tho
A lot of times, yes, he did. It’s the same concept/technique. Whipping it the other direction just gives a different feel/control of the pitch. A little easier to crank it higher that way.
@@HunterHomistek and it looks cooler
@@landhomer4627 Can't disagree there. Everything Dime did looked cooler.
Lets go Steelers! Great friggin squeals too man
Thanks, man! I appreciate that. Here we go. 💪🤘
Just bought a used Marshall MG100DFX and will use your tips. Thanks! I'm in process of buying the same noise gate, but I'm intending to use the send and return inputs on the pedal to send to the send/return on back of the amp to reduce noise even more. "The four cable" method. Just curious why you didn't do that with your set up since you have the noise gate with 4 jacks to allow you to do it.
That’s a great call. That is definitely the best way to hook it up. Super simple reason why I didn’t hear: No FX loop on the amp. 😂😂 Also, just for a beginner set up, the straightforward way I show is a little easier and cheaper. But the 4-cable method is absolutely legit and awesome.
I lol'd
Hell yeah. Mission accomplished. haha
@@HunterHomistek The gothic models are such a weird cool thing. want one for my collection one day

😂 nice one and yeah its 🎷 😅😅
#SaxLife haha
Amazing explanation!! Which guitar is that though?
It’s a custom telecaster a luthier from Canada built. Lydian Guitars. It has a Wilkinson tremolo, which honestly isn’t ideal for this technique 😂 A double-locking system like a Floyd Rose is really what ya want for this. But we made it work. 🔥
That's a good explanation
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for checking it out 💪

I'd kill for your tone without any pedals. I can't get shit out of my equipment.
What are you using for gear? I’ll try to help the best I can. 🙏
This song always makes me tear up, especially that part.
I don’t know how anyone could possibly rank the best songs of all time. But if I HAD to, this one absolutely cracks the top 10 and possibly the top 5. It’s unreal. The mood it creates is unmatched.

Thanks, Colin! Appreciate you watching 💪
Good job man!
Thank you! I rarely play acoustic, but it seemed like the right song for the occasion 💪
I use OG MG15w in home, on gigs and basically anywhere. Yes. It's my first amp from over a decade ago! It has a mode that basically mimics "tube" ampish sound. Instead of using OD pedal i use Sharp Fuzz cranked up to 11 and the same noise gate as you. Ad some of the amps own gain and it gives massive sound for it's size.

One thing I'll add is that scooped mid tones *CAN* work, and often do work in band and mix settings more often than a lot of people think. *HOWEVER*, you absolutely do not want to nuke them. The guitar is a mid-ranged instrument, so you need mids whether you're using a mid-scooped or mid-forward sound. The overdrive in front will help by hitting the amp at the front with a lot of mids, but you still need to have some in your amp settings. When I'm using a mid-scooped sound, I'm setting them on the amp to around 11:00, maybe 10:00 on the lower end. EQ pedals in the effects loop can also help with making a mid-scooped sound that won't get buried since you can attenuate the more boxy and muddy frequencies in the low-mids while keeping or even boosting the ones that will help you cut through in the upper-mids. Just a few tips from a stubborn-ass meathead death metal dude that will not ever quit scooping mids.
That's some advanced advice right there, my friend. Love it! All really good points.
So much personality, brilliant 👍🇬🇧
Thanks for watching, Jeffrey! Glad you liked it. Really appreciate that.
Love the vids you do!
Appreciate the kind words! Thanks for watching.
I think that amp has contour not mids for i know some marshall have that and some have bass, mids and treble contour is very different
A shaping contour is definitely different. But you can clearly tell with your ears it’s just a mids control by another name on this one. When I put the mid/contour on zero, it’s a classic scooped mids sound.
mic placement and eq ftw
Fantastic choices as well. An EQ in the loop is a gamebreaker.
As soon as you start playing "Cat Scratch Fever" I subscribed. Well done! 💚🎸
It never fails! An all-time great song and riff. And a genuinely great tone-testing riff! If Cat Scratch feels and sounds good through an amp, it’s a good amp. 🔥🤘
Play an acoustic song 1 time. + Pinch fail.
You want me to play real music?! No way, Melissa! Although... I do wonder if I could pinch on an acoustic now. Might have to try that.
Glen from SpecterSoundStudio has been saying this for years! Glad to see speakers entering the guitar discourse a little more :)
Awesome! I'll have to check out his stuff. That's great.
Adding an EVH 2x12 to our little PRS MT15 produced a firebreathing chug-pocalypse. The CAB man, the CAB. It seems obvious to anyone that grew up listening to those big 70s living room speakers instead of a bluetooth speaker.
Isn't it crazy? Why is it so overlooked? Heck, even myself! I didn't REALLY think about it until recently.
people forget, all those settings, pickups, pedals, and even the guitar......speaker is the biggest change in sound....even more so, arguably, than the head....
It's actually insane how dramatically different the tones are among just these three cabs. Throw more into the mix, and it only gets crazier. Yay, tone chasing! haha
It’s too bad UA-cam shut down the old channels of substance and now promotes clickbait ba
What does the video fail to deliver? I'm always trying to improve, so let me know how you think the actual content of the video fails to deliver on the title. When you say "clickbait," I think that means you clicked a video expecting one thing but got another thing. As in, you were baited in to click then disappointed in what you found. If a video gets you to click but then delivers actual content, that just seems like... an effective video? Maybe that's just me. But if the video is lacking something for you, I genuinely want to work on that and improve the content moving forward.
I'm glad you mentioned the room mic. I hate getting a great tone and then once you put a mic up to the speaker and listen back you think, what happened to my sweet tone !?!?! Gotta post EQ for an hour XD Good stuff man!! I'm gonna have to invest in a new cab one day to get a better tone out of my vintage PARK head amp!
Asbolutely, dude! Mic'ing is an entirely different dark art. You can make a bad amp sound good and a good amp sound bad with no problem. 😂 I wasn't trying to open that particular can of worms here! Also, you have a Park?! That's incredible. Good for you, dude. Let's go!
